Study: Pathfinder has major impact on economy

Pathfinder Services has contributed $435 million to the Indiana economy over the past five years, according to an economic impact study conducted by New England Market Research.

The nonprofit organization, headquartered in Huntington, assists people with developmental and economic challenges in achieving independence, inclusion and stability. The agency's services include prenatal education, child care, employment services, homebuyer education and assistance, services for teens and adults with intellectual disabilities, manufacturing solutions and aging-in-place products.

"The summary of this report reinforces the work we are doing is having an impact on the economy and shows how important community development is to the local and state economy," said John Niederman, president of Path- finder Services.

The study examined Pathfinder Services' contribution from 2009 to 2013. In addition to the $435 million contribution to the state economy, the study showed that Pathfinder Services sustained 679 jobs annually and generated more than $46 million in tax revenue. For every $1 of Pathfinder Services annual operating budget, $5.60 economic output was generated.

The study accounts for direct and indirect economic impacts. Tax revenue, sustained employment, contribution to local labor income and economic activities such as physical construction all factored into the study.

"While it is exciting to see the numbers and facts regarding the impact of Pathfinder Services on the economy, the true return comes in the form of the stories we hear from the individuals and families we serve," Niederman said. "We strive every day to have a positive impact by providing choice and allowing people of all abilities to have control over their own destinies."
