Students from two Huntington County schools will get some hands-on environmental lessons with the aid of project grants totaling $3,999 from CF Industries.

The company partnered with Lancaster Elementary School and Riverview Middle School to provide the grants to teachers who incorporate agriculture or the environment in the classroom.

The grants support projects in the classrooms of Shelley Paschal of Lancaster Elementary and Riverview teachers Mel-anie Park, Mike Beaver, Lisa Nightingale, Jill Spenner, Brandi Cross, Meghan McElhaney, Dave Goodmiller, Blake Childs, Marta Waldfogel, Cari Whicker, Steve Park, Les Hoffman, Deb Daugherty, Rochelle Kennedy, Kelsey Knox and Mycal Rodenbeck.

Students will learn to recycle and explore how recycling benefits the environment; maintain an outdoor classroom to learn about stewardship; analyze water in the Wabash River and determine the impact of humans on the water; and sample soils from around Huntington County, test and document results and investigate the causes of variances in the soils.

Since the inception of the program, CF Industries has provided more than $800,000 to teachers through its Classroom Minigrant Program. The Huntington Terminal alone has donated more than $85,000 to date to support public safety, education and youth development organizations in the greater Huntington community.

“The creative projects make supporting the Huntington area teachers a pleasure,” says Brad Gordon, superintendent of CF Industries’ Huntington Terminal. “It is always interesting to see what innovative educational opportunities the teachers come up with for their CF Industries’ Classroom Minigrants applications.”

CF Industries’ Huntington Terminal has been a part of the Huntington community since 1972. The company is a leader in fertilizer and manufacturing and distribution, and the second largest nitrogen producer in the world. More information is available online at www.cfind ustries.com.
