Lee Cutting, co-owner of Norwood Golf Course, in Huntington, remembers what the Huntington Elks Club was like in the 1970s.

“It used to be the place to be,” he says of the club, which was based in a building on the golf course. “It had a huge following.”

If Cutting and his fellow owners have their way, that building will become a hub of activity once more.

Interested in giving people reasons to come to Norwood during the golfing offseason, Cutting, along with co-owners Jason Kennedy and Kevin Killen, decided to install a golf simulator in the former Elks building and also revamp its lower level into a family-friendly bar and grill.

Norwood is the only golf course in Huntington with a simulator, notes Cutting.

“The simulator’s going to be key for us for multiple different things,” he states. “Obviously, it’ll keep people swinging throughout the winter, but also we went with a pretty high-tech indoor simulator, so that way we could still do lessons and things on it.”

Cutting says that a nine-week league consisting of 21 two-man teams has already commenced play on the simulator, which was installed at the end of November. More leagues are set to begin at the end of January.

The bar and grill, called the Foxhole Pub, had its grand opening Dec. 13 and is run by Garin Stephan, Norwood’s director of food and beverage. Its menu consists of sandwiches, artisan pizzas, salads and appetizers, all of which are prepared in a refurbished kitchen.

The Foxhole Pub also caters events, Cutting says, and is available to be rented out for gatherings, ranging from Christmas parties to banquets.

Ultimately, Cutting says, he and his fellow owners aspire for Norwood to become known as more than a golf course.

“We’re trying to broaden the different services that we offer outside of golf … Obviously, we want to do as much as we can for the community,” he says.

Perhaps one day the former Elks building will start looking like it did in its glory days.
“We want to kind of get that atmosphere back,” Cutting says.

The golf simulator is open every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tee times are required and can be reserved by calling Norwood at 260-356-5929.

Foxhole Pub welcomes all ages and is open Monday and Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from noon to midnight. The full menu will be served until 10 p.m., with a reduced menu offered until close. To inquire about catering or to reserve Foxhole Pub, call Norwood.
