Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery is wrapping up the celebration of its 50th year in business this December.

Throughout 2014, the frame shop and gallery has observed the occasion through the production of various art shows and exhibits.

“In an average year, we usually have about 10 shows,” says Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery Owner Ann Shive. “We are not exactly certain of the date that it opened 50 years ago, so, what we’ve had a different art show every month to celebrate.”

Shive became the shop’s fourth owner when she bought the business from Wally Orr at the end of 2011, she noted. Orr had owned it for 23 years, she said.

Each art show has featured different themes or artists. Over the course of the year, Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery has shown everything from pottery to paintings.

“We’ve had a vessel show,” said Shive, “which encompassed everything from pottery vessels to wood vessels, metal vessels and jewelry that had the shape of a vessel and paintings having to do with vessels.

“We had a plein air show. We also have a plein air painting event. Plein air is when the artist goes outside and paints what they see in a quick hour or two, sometimes even quicker.”

Other displays at the frame shop and gallery have pertained to art you can use, watercolors and drawings.

“We’ve kept really busy with all sorts of things,” Shive says. “We had a young artist show that had all different mixed media and a show with art up for sale.”

However, these shows have come secondary to Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery’s primary customer services.

“We don’t just frame, we take care of people’s things that other shops can’t do. Everything we do is totally custom,” said Shive. “We really try to build a relationship with our clients.”

Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery offers a variety of services to artists and art owners that isn’t limited to just framing. According to Shive, they can care for and restore art in a variety of media.

“I can’t do it without Casey (Kroh). He does framing and digital printing,” she says. “I can’t do it without the training he has.”

Along with frame work and restorations, Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery also has printing capabilities available for digital media. They can print digital art up to 44 inches wide and up to 12 feet long on paper, canvas or a special bamboo material.

Other digital services include scanning photos and photo touch up.

“I really appreciate the people that work for me and the artists that work with me,” said Shive. “I also can’t do it without the artists. It’s a tough business and it’s tough for artists to get seen and noticed.”

Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery is a place where artists can have their work recognized, shown and cared for, said Shive.
