State announces graduation, voucher statistics

The Indiana Department of Education has released statistics concerning graduation rates and school vouchers, including local numbers in Huntington County.

Indiana’s graduation rate for 2013-14 jumped to 89.8 percent, up from 88.6 percent the year before, according to data recently released by the Indiana Department of Education.

Indiana’s non-waiver graduation rate also saw an increase. The non-waiver graduation rate was 83.4 percent, up from 81.7 percent in the previous year.

Comparatively, Huntington North High School’s graduation rate was 89.6 percent, with 361 students graduating in 2014.

The count begins with a cohort of freshman entering their first year of high school.

Of the 403 students who started high school four years earlier, 361 students were counted as graduates.

A total of 189 females out of a total of 205 females in the cohort, or 92.2 percent, graduated.

Out of a cohort of 198 males, 172, representing 86.9 percent, graduated.

Other HCCSC graduation statistics include:

• 88.9 percent of the district’s Hispanic population (16 of 18) graduated.

• 89.6 percent of the district’s white population (335 of 374) graduated.

• 97.4 percent of the general education population (334 of 343) graduated.

• 93.1 percent of the special education population (27 of 29) graduated.

• 94.8 percent of those receiving free or reduced price meals (91 of 96) graduated.

• 98.2 percent of those paying full price for meals (269 of 274) graduated.

HCCSC’s non-waiver graduation rate was 86.4 percent. The non-waiver rate excludes those graduates who received a diploma with a waiver and have not met the basic expectation that all students pass the state’s Graduation Examination before exiting high school with a diploma.

Indiana’s Choice Scholarship report for 2013-14 shows 77 students in the HCCSC district took advantage of the program. This year, 90 students received the scholarship vouchers.

The program — also known as the school voucher program — was passed by the Indiana General Assembly in 2011. It provides Choice Scholarships to students in households that meet income and eligibility requirements. The program provides funds to assist with the payment of tuition and fees at a participating Choice School.

At Huntington Catholic School, 53 students received the scholarships in 2013-14 and 53 received them for the current school year.

At another parochial school located in Huntington County, Aboite Christian School, no students used Choice Scholarships in the 2013-14 school year. However, 27 received them for the 2014-15 school year.
