Huntington County was represented in a gathering of youths from across the state.

Gov. Mike Pence attended the Indiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs’ Legislative Lunch in the South Atrium of the Indiana Statehouse on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The event showcased the collective footprint of Boys & Girls Clubs across the state, including 38 separate Club organizations, and to celebrate the nine-year partnership of serving Indiana’s Kids.

Representing the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County were club members Austin Burnworth, Jordan Medsker, Craig Martin, Gabbie Minick and Selena Burnworth.

The program, Indiana’s Kids (formerly Mitch’s Kids, named after former Gov. Mitch Daniels) has helped almost 40,000 youth increase reading and math skills since it launched in 2006.

“This support from the state of Indiana has allowed the clubs to focus on those kids who need us most,” said Ray Black, executive director of the Lide White Memorial Boys & Girls Club. “The partnership has developed a history of helping kids achieve their dream of becoming self-sufficient young adults.”

Tuesday’s event drew more than 90 members of the Senate and House of Representatives, Treasurer of State Kelly Mitchell and State Auditor Suzanne Crouch. Guest legislators met with club officials from their districts to learn about the impact of Indiana’s Kids locally and several had a chance to take pictures with youth members.

The event was capped with leadership from the Indiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs presenting a photo collage of youth members across Indiana to Pence and to officials from Serve Indiana, in honor of the program’s success.
