Andrews looking to replace old siren system

Leaders in Andrews are exploring options for replacing the siren system used to warn the community of approaching tornadoes and other emergencies.

Town Marshal Van Juillerat, speaking to members of the Andrews Town Council during their meeting on Monday, April 13, expressed concern about the system’s failure to activate during a recent test. He said the town might want to consider replacing the current system with a new system that includes a backup generator, which would allow the sirens to sound even if power is lost.

Fire Chief Tom Wuensch said he planned to meet with the director of the Huntington County Emergency Management Agen- cy to discuss the issue, noting that several options are available to replace the current system.

Council President Mike Rohler said he plans to meet with Huntington County representatives to determine the best course of action for the town.

In other business:

• Council members decided to delay finalization of a contact with the Andrews Volunteer Fire Department until they can review the fire department’s bylaws. Wuensch said the bylaws, which are currently being revised, will define stipend amounts. Because the amounts would be included in the bylaws, Wuensch said a contract with the town might not be necessary.

• Clerk-Treasurer Bill Johnson announced that the town’s annual spring cleanup day will be on Friday, May 1.

Residents should place items at the curb for pickup. The provider will cover each street only once.

More information about the cleanup is available at the clerk’s office.
