Dyson, Frederick earn Lilly finalist scholarships

Kristen Dyson and Kylie Frederick, members of the Huntington North High School Class of 2015, have been named as Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship finalists for Huntington County.

As such, both will receive $1,500 scholarships for each of their four years of undergraduate study provided by the Huntington County Community Foundation.

Dyson is the daughter of Deborah and Roger Dyson, of Huntington. She will attend the University of Indianapolis majoring in psychology, with plans to earn a doctorate of occupational therapy and follow a career as an occupational therapist.

During her high school career, Dyson has been a student leader in Youth for Christ, a member of the Rotary Interact Service Club, 4-H, class council, Leading Leos and a three-year member of the HNHS tennis team. She is in the Top 25 of her class and a member of the National Honor Society.

Dyson’s community service activities have primarily involved Youth for Christ, Rotary Interact, Special Olympics, Leading Leos and Trinity United Methodist Church. Many will recognize her as a barista at The Party Shop.

Frederick is the daughter of Elizabeth and John Shortridge, of Huntington, and Rex Frederick, of Huntington. She will attend Indiana University majoring in English with a focus on creative writing and a minor in Spanish. Her career goal is to teach at the college level and continue toward her ambition of becoming a published author.

While at HNHS, Frederick has served as editor-in-chief of The Campus student newspaper, co-captain of the tennis team, member of the class council and Rotary Interact Service Club, and as a student leader of Youth for Christ. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a Top 25 student. She also has received numerous awards in sports and for her writing prowess.

Frederick’s volunteer activities have included more than 5,000 hours at the Huntington County Humane Society, providing for people in poverty through New Missions, and teaching tennis skills to youth via Viking tennis at camps, academies and tournaments. Frederick is a self-employed tennis instructor during her summer vacations.
