Hauenstein Road construction to start May 26

Portions of Hauenstein Road will be closed or restricted, beginning on Tuesday, May 26, and continuing through at least mid-July, as extensive repairs are done on the road.

Access to businesses along the road will be maintained throughout the project, a city official says, except during brief times when heavy equipment is being moved.

Anthony Goodnight, director of public works and engineering services for the City of Huntington, says the project is scheduled to start on Tuesday, May 26, and is expected to continue for at least 45 days, weather permitting.

Hauenstein Road will be closed between Hotel Avenue and Commercial Road.

Initially, Hauenstein Road will be open to westbound traffic only between Jefferson Street (Ind.-5) and Hotel Avenue. Later in the project, the eastbound lane will be open and the westbound lane will be closed.

Construction crews will use a process known as full-depth reclamation, using the existing surface of the road as the base of the new road. Full-depth reclamation is less expensive than traditional road building methods, Goodnight says.

The existing surface of the road will be tilled and injected with cement, which will create some dust, Goodnight says. That process will create a sound base for the new road.
