Property taxes now past due; penalty added to late payments

A penalty is now being imposed on late property tax payments, the Huntington County treasurer’s office has announced.

Tax payments were due May 11.

The penalty will be 5 percent of the unpaid tax if the installment is completely paid on or before June 10 and if the taxpayer is not liable for delinquent property taxes for the same parcel. If taxes are due for more than the first installment of this year, the penalty will be 10 percent of the unpaid tax.

Properties are eligible to be placed in a tax sale if the first property tax installment or  penalty is unpaid from last year or a prior year. To have the property removed from that list,  payments must be received in the county treasurer’s office no later than June 19. Letters notifying property owners of the tax sale status were mailed March 25.

The tax sale for Huntington County will be held in the GAR Room on the second floor of the Huntington County Courthouse on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. A list of properties will be posted online at www.sritaxsale.com later this summer.

The county treasurer’s office is located on the first floor of the courthouse and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Payments may be mailed to 201 N Jefferson St., Room 104, Huntington IN 46750.
