Tribute to flag-raising memorial

Edith Harmon (left), an intern in the Huntington County Veterans Service Office, reads a tribute remembering the boys — most under 20 years old — depicted in the memorial to the 1945 flag-raising at Iwo Jima, which took place 70 years ago. Three of the Marines were killed in action, she said, just days after Joe Rosenthal took the famous photo that provided the basis for the memorial, seen behind Harmon. At right is Huntington County Veterans Service Officer Bruce Stanton. The tribute was part of the Memorial Day program held Monday evening, May 25, at the First Church of the Nazarene. Local veterans’ organizations and community residents remembered the 134 Huntington County men who have been killed in battle, as well as the 95 Huntington County veterans who died in 2014.
