Local Habitat group to do Operation Backyard

Youth leaders and youth groups in Huntington will partner with Huntington County Habitat for Humanity for Operation Backyard, spending several days in July serving people in their own communities.

This is the ninth year for Operation Backyard, which will take place July 10 through 12. This year’s group will work in a neighborhood near Memorial Park, covering six to eight blocks. Program leaders will visit homeowners in the area prior to the start of the program to find out what the youth could do for them.

Youth will spend their mornings performing tasks such as basic landscaping jobs, cleaning yards, painting trim and caulking windows. Their afternoons will include visits to nursing homes.

The program is open to youth ages 12 to 16, who will be housed at Huntington University. A fee is charged for each participant, and the fee includes a T-shirt, food and supplies. More than 200 youth are expected to participate.

Organizers are seeking financial support for the project from area businesses. Donations can be sent to College Park Church, 1936 College Ave., Huntington, IN 46750. Checks should be designated for Operation Backyard.
