Andrews trash collection fees going up next month

Trash collection rates in Andrews will increase beginning next month, as the town's contract with Marion Services, LLC, requires such action, said Bill Johnson, Andrews clerk/treasurer.

Beginning Feb. 1, 2010, trash collection rates will increase to $8.50 per unit, per month, up from the current rate of $6.50 per unit, per month. On Feb. 1, 2011, the same rate will increase to $10.

The Andrews Town Council approved the increase in the form of Ordinance 2010-1, at the council's meeting on Monday, Jan. 11.

The council also named Councilman Bob Gray as council president on a 2-1 vote. Gray and previous council President Karl Shockome voted in favor of the nomination, and Councilman Ray Tackett dissented.

Shockome will remain on the council as a council member.

The town council also approved the re-appointment of Lori Powell and Chuck Miller to the Andrews Board of Zoning Appeals. Powell has already agreed to the appointment, and Miller's appointment is pending his agreement to the position.

Town Manager/Town Marshal Van Juillerat was re-appointed to serve as the town's representative to the Region III-A Economic Development District & Regional Planning Commission.

Councilman Ray Tackett addressed the council with the notion of lowering the current water deposit rate of $150. Tackett believes a lower fee could aid the town's growth.

"I think a $25 to $50 should be sufficient enough," he said.

Gray said that the council should look at the original ordinance defining the fee before further action is pressed.

The council also agreed to continue with the process of transferring the land on which the Andrews/Dallas Township Public Library sits, in order to allow the library to pursue a Community Focus Fund Grant for an addition onto the building.
