Jay Poe, 51, has announced his plans to run for another term as Huntington County surveyor. He is currently in his 20th year in this position.

Poe will seek the Republican nomination to the office during the May primary.

His major accomplishment, he says, is getting the Huntington County Council to invest in the Geographic Information System (GIS) of computerized mapping. Poe was also in charge of locating grants which cut the cost by more than half, he says.

"The startup of our GIS is the one thing I will always be proud of because I believe it is a tremendously valuable asset to our landowners," Poe says.

Poe has served as president of numerous surveying organizations and groups, including the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors, the Huntington County Plan Commission and the Huntington Board of Zoning Appeals. He has also served as chairman and vice president of the Association of Indiana Counties, where he has served for five years.

He has also given presentations and seminars about surveying.

Poe says he has also eliminated a backlog of surveying requests. He says the first application he reviewed was filed 14 years prior to his first day on the job. He explains that now he and his staff can begin a project that same day it was filed, maybe the day after.

"I am asking the voters of Huntington County to allow me the opportunity to continue to provide my professional abilities to the office of the Huntington County surveyor," Poe says.
