Some county taxpayers could see adjusted tax bills in mail

Some Huntington County taxpayers will be receiving adjusted tax bills in the mail.

These taxpayers are receiving the bills because the assessor’s office has revised its valuations of geothermal units in the county. Michael Duffy, general counsel for the Indiana

Department of Local Government Finance, instructed the assessor’s office to amend its valuations upon learning that it assessed small and large geothermal units the same.

Affected taxpayers can expect to receive a document with their new bills that notifies them about the change as well as the reason for it, says County Auditor Cindy Yeiter. Recipients will also be informed if they now owe money or if they have overpaid and will receive a credit on their fall tax bill.

Taxpayers who owe money will be expected to pay at that time, says Yeiter. However, their deadline to do so will fall after the May 10 deadline that applies to all other taxpayers.

For those taxpayers who owe money and pay their tax bill through their mortgage company, companies that have not yet paid bills will be contacted. Taxpayers with companies that have already paid will be instructed to contact their companies and inform them to make another payment.
