YMCA to offer seven-week volleyball course

The YMCA of Huntington County has announced upcoming volleyball events.

The YMCA is offering a seven-week course for girls in third through fifth grades that teaches the basic fundamental skills needed to learn the game of volleyball. In addition, girls will be taught competitive drills, individual workouts, games for skill development, along with game strategies.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. beginning Feb. 26. The course instructor will be Melissa Grossman, a former Huntington North varsity player who recently signed to play next season at Huntington University.

Each participant should have tennis shoes and shorts. The t-shirts will be provided.

There is a registration fee. Registration can be done by e-mailing registra tion@www.huntingtony.org, or at the front desk of the YMCA.

The YMCA will also be offering a girls' volleyball league for fifth through eighth graders. All teams will practice each week on a Monday or Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., or 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. starting the week of Feb. 22.

Games will be played every Saturday for seven weeks, March 6 through May 1, excluding Spring Break. Matches will be played on two separate courts every Saturday morning at the YMCA. A tournament will be played at the end of the season.

Teams will consist of eight players who will be placed by YMCA staff and will be coached by volunteers.
