38 percent of Hoosiers vote in primary election

Secretary of State Connie Lawson has announced that 38 percent, or 1,771,753, of Indiana’s 4.7 million registered voters cast a vote in the 2016 Primary Election.

Voter statistics were compiled by the secretary of state’s office using voter data gathered in Indiana’s 92 counties.

Voter turnout in the 2016 primary is comparable to the 2008 primary, she said. In 2008, 40 percent of registered Hoosiers voted in the primary election.

In 2012, with no presidential candidates on the ballot, 22 percent of Hoosiers voted in the primary.

Vermillion County had the highest turnout, at 51 percent. Scott County had the lowest turnout, at 30 percent. The turnout in Huntington County was 41 percent.

Early voting continues to rise in popularity, she said. In 2008, early voting across the state was at 11 percent for the primary election. It grew to 12 percent in 2012. This year, it reached 16 percent.

Of the 10,759 Huntington County residents who voted in the 2016 primary, 30 percent cast their votes prior to May 3.
