Roanoke council awards Wayne contract for Commercial St. redo

The Roanoke Town Council held a special meeting on Wednesday, June 1, to review bids for the cost of reconstructing Commercial Street.

The council considered two bids for reconstruction of the length of Commercial Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. Brooks Construction offered a base bid of $439,968 for the project, and Wayne Asphalt gave a base bid of $407,116. The council made a motion to approve Wayne Asphalt to do the necessary construction work.

Next, the council reviewed two bids to install a double barrel siphon at Cow Creek Sanitary Sewer Crossing. Ironclad Excavating gave a total bid of $80,128, and Bercot Excavating gave a total bid of $108,231. The council made a motion to approve Ironclad for the project.

After the review, Phil Hibbert, supervisor of operations for Roanoke, said that he had plans to lay an extra 800-plus feet of storm sewer discharge following Commercial Street between Sixth and Randy Williams Street.

Hibbert estimated the installation would cost approximately $395,000 if the council decided to approve it. The cost was factored into the $407,116 that the town would pay Wayne Asphalt for reconstruction, leaving a difference of almost $12,000.  The council  did not make a formal approval of the project.
