Ellie Lawson, a history major at Huntington University, is the recipient of the first Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival Scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student majoring in history or a related field.

Lawson is a freshman at HU, with a history major and business minor. She is the daughter of Russ and Heidi Lawson. She is a 2016 graduate of Huntington North High School.

Lawson has served as an intern in the Indiana Room of the Huntington City-Township Public Library. She hopes to study abroad in England or Germany and plans to attend graduate school to specialize in World War II and the Holocaust, eventually making a career as a historian.

“Since I was a young girl that could understand what really happened, I have been intrigued by the events that took place,” she says. “I will bring awareness and become an advocate to educate the masses about the Holocaust and the atrocities committed.”

She calls the Pioneer Festival a “cornerstone event” in Huntington County and credits the festival with enlarging her knowledge of history.

“The festival has taught me so much about the history and origins of Indiana,” she says.
