The Roanoke Town Council approved the use of golf carts on town streets with some restrictions at the council's meeting on Tuesday, March 2.
Councilman Nick Altman has overseen the ordinance, which is based on a similar ordinance passed by the town of Ossian in 2009.
Golf carts were banned from municipal streets by a 2009 Indiana law, but towns and cities were given permission to create exemptions.
Roanoke will allow the vehicles to be operated from March 1 to Nov. 30 during daylight hours.
All golf carts must be registered at the police station in the town hall, and must display a registration sticker on the cart. Drivers must be licensed and must comply with all traffic laws, and can be fined and cited as if he or she is operating an automobile.
Carts may not carry infants, nor carry more than three minors if the operator is also a minor. Carts cannot be driven in areas where the speed limit is greater than 30 mph, any path that also prohibits motor vehicles nor can carts be operated on U.S. 24, except to cross the highway.
Golf carts operating in connection with the annual Roanoke Fall Festival are exempt from the ordinance within the festival area.
