Huntington County history buff Gib Young will present a free program on Wednesday, March 17, at 4 p.m. in the G.A.R. Room on the second floor of the Huntington County Courthouse.
G.A.R. stands for Grand Army of the Republic, which was a fraternal organization of Union veterans of the Civil War.
It was not uncommon for county courthouses to set aside rooms for their G.A.R. organizations. The G.A.R. was dissolved after the death of its last member in 1956.
Young is a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a successor to the G.A.R.
The G.A.R. Room in the local courthouse features civil War insignias and portraits hand painted on the walls. Young will explain the significance of those decorations.
The program is sponsored by the Huntington County Junior Historical Society and is free and open to the public.
