Terry Stoffel has announced that he is a candidate in the May primary for the Republican nomination as Huntington County Sheriff.

"For as long as I can recall, my interest has been about this community and the people that reside here," says Stoffel, a lifelong Huntington County resident.

He is president of the Fraternal Order of Police, serves on the PAL board, is a DARE instructor and is administrator of the Shop with a Cop program. He originated the resource officer at Huntington North High School. Stoffel is also a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, an auxiliary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a former member of the United Way Advisory Board and the Salvation Army Board, and a volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County.

"I feel I am the person to tear down the wall of separation that exists between city and county police agencies," says Stoffel, citing the need for better sharing of information and resources to save money, improve communication and eliminate duplicate services.
Stoffel, a member and former chief of the Huntington Police Department, points to his eight years of administrative experience and his experience on the streets as advantageous.

"If elected sheriff, I would be out taking calls and backing up my officers," Stoffel says.

As sheriff, he says, he would work to implement 24-hour law enforcement coverage in the county, a cleanup crew made up of non-violent offenders, two detectives using the existing staff and a police dog program funded by donations. He plans to appoint Chris Newton, currently a Huntington County deputy, as his second in command.
