Indiana's River Friendly Farmer program taking applications

Indiana's River Friendly Farmer Award Program, a statewide initiative that recognizes farmers who protect and enhance Indiana's rivers, lakes and streams, is currently accepting applications.

The Indiana River Friendly Farmer Program is sponsored by the Indiana Farm Bureau Inc., the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the 92 County SWCDs, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture Division of Soil Conservation and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Anyone may nominate a farmer for this award. Applications are available at the Soil and Water Conservation District office, 2040 Riverfork Drive, Huntington. Huntington County requires farmers to answer questions regarding soil conservation, nutrient management, manure management, and pesticide usage. If answers meet the program criteria, the farmer will be eligible for public recognition as a River Friendly Farmer.

Award recipients will be recognized during Farmers' Day at the Indiana State Fair in August and will receive a River Friendly Farmer sign for display on their farm.

Applications need to be turned in to the SWCD office by May 10.

For more information, contact the local SWCD office at 356-6816 ext. 3.
