Heartland REMC crews sent down south to help with Irma recovery

Heartland REMC has sent crews and equipment to assist in the Hurricane Irma recovery efforts.

The storm has created widespread property damage with more than 6 million individuals without power in the southeastern part of the country. Roughly 931,000 of these are electric co-op outages.

An estimated 60 Indiana electric cooperative linemen left Indiana Electric Cooperatives in Indianapolis Tuesday, Sept. 12. The crews will work in two-week shifts until power is restored to the region.

The two Heartland REMC crews will begin their restoration work helping Sumter EMC in Americus, GA.

Because the national network of transmission and distribution infrastructure owned by electric cooperatives has been built to federal standards, line crews from any American electric cooperative can arrive on the scene knowledgeable about the system’s engineering.

Heartland REMC, located in Markle and Wabash, is an electric utility cooperative serving over 17,000 members in north central Indiana.
