Treasurer: Property owners late in paying their taxes now owe penalty

Property taxes were due Nov. 13 and delinquent taxpayers now owe a penalty, notes Huntington County Treasurer Paula Farley.

Indiana law requires the county treasurer to add a late payment penalty to the unpaid portions of the amounts due for each installment of property taxes.

The penalty will be in the amount of 5 percent of the unpaid tax if the installment is completely paid on or before the 30 days after the due date and property owners are not liable for delinquent property taxes first due and payable in a previous installment for the same parcel.

The last day to pay with a 5 percent penalty will be Dec. 13, Farley notes.

If taxes are due for more than the second installment of this year, then the penalty will be in the amount of 10 percent of the unpaid tax.

The county treasurer’s office in the courthouse is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Payments may be mailed to 201 N. Jefferson St., Room 104, Huntington IN 46750. Taxpayers may pay in person with cash or check. No credit or debit cards are accepted in the office.

Envelopes must be postmarked no later than Dec. 13 to be eligible for the 5 percent penalty, Farley says.
