Although the filing period has only been open since Wednesday, Jan. 10, interest has been high among those seeking to fill elected seats in Huntington County, according to the Huntington Clerk’s Office.

As the office opened its doors to allow candidates to file their intention to run for office in the upcoming May 8 primary, candidates and supporters – overwhelmingly Republican – spilled out into the outer hallway while others filled out the necessary paperwork.

Voters will not see town council seats listed in the May primary. Those positions do not run on political party tickets. The exception is Andrews Town Council; no seats on that council are up for election this year.

However, Republican Carrie M. Miller has filed her candidacy for Warren Town Council.

Voter Registration and Election Deputy Pam Fowler says there is still plenty of time for those who avoided the initial rush to file their candidacy.

“It’s been a decent start, but we’ve got a month,” she says. “A lot of them like to wait until that last minute. They’ll trickle in all the way through.”

The deadline for candidates to file to be included in the primary election is at noon on Friday, Feb. 9.
