Five Huntington North High School students have been tapped as LaFontaine Arts Council artists of the month for December and January.

The December artists are Sarah Kauffman, drawing; Robert Borland, drama; and Gabrielle Haneline, vocal music. January awardees are Madison Sheets, yearbook; and Elizabeth Allred, Viking New Tech.

• Kauffman, a senior, is the daughter of Arthur and Tracey Easterday, of Huntington. She was nominated by Art Teacher Joe Haft, who mentioned Kauffman’s accolades in ArtsExpress, Principal’s Art Award, National Art Society and Junior Rotarian.

“Sara is a hard working student who diligently researches all of her drawings,” he wrote. “She pays attention to details in order to create a complete drawing that is esthetically pleasing with at times unusual subject matter.”

• Borland, a senior, is the son of Bob and Dale Borland. He was nominated by Drama Teacher Ruth Reed, who said Borland has been actively involved in all of the Masque & Gavel Drama club’s shows for the past four years.

“He has served as the villain in our melodramas, a wide variety of animated roles in the one-act play festivals, leading roles in the winter plays, funny skits in the variety shows and delightful roles in our spring musicals,” Reed wrote. “Robert is a gifted performer and I am so thankful that he has shared his dynamic talent with us.”

• Haneline, a senior, is the daughter of Martin and Rita Haneline, of Roanoke. Choir teacher Dan Baker nominated her, noting her participation in Varsity Singers as its company manager, and a solo contest champion from a competition held at Lawrence Central High School in 2017.

“Gabi is a fantastic student with such a great positive energy,” he wrote. “She is a wonderful talent and great person.”

• Sheets, a sophomore, is the daughter of Gary Sheets and Alena Rasnick, both of Warren. She was nominated by teacher Kourtney Yoder for her work with DEKA and the yearbook.

• Allred, a senior, is the granddaughter of Tammy and Steve Allred, of Huntington. She was nominated by Viking New Tech instructor Chelsea Noffsinger.

Allred’s plans after graduation are to attend Manchester University, majoring in social work and with a minor in criminal justice or pre-law.
