Zay’s DCS bill receives Senate nod; now under consideration in House

A bill authored by State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) that would encourage the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) to share information on a child’s case plan with the child’s school corporation recently passed the Senate unanimously.

Senate Bill 428 would also require the DCS to provide information to the courts to be included in a child’s case file when a parent violates certain orders, such as failing a required drug test.

“I learned firsthand the importance of open communication between DCS and school officials in my district earlier this school year,” Zay said. “When there’s a life and death situation, DCS needs to cooperate with the student’s school with regard to sharing relevant information. I fully respect the confidentiality of children, but there is nothing more important than the student’s well-being.”

SB 428 has now moved to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
