Humane shelter open again

The Huntington County Humane Shelter has reopened after a viral outbreak closed its doors for over three weeks.

In late May, the shelter impounded 13 dogs from a home, which led to an outbreak of canine parvovirus. To contain and eradicate the highly contagious virus, the shelter closed on May 24.

After shelter staffers administered vaccines for the virus and thoroughly cleaned the facility with bleach, the shelter reopened on June 18.

This is the second time this year the shelter has had to close due to the spread of illness. The facility was closed for much of April after kennel cough and calicivirus spread among its canine and feline occupants, respectively. After eliminating all traces of the ailments, the shelter reopened on May 7.

The cost of battling both illness outbreaks has left the shelter in desperate need of donations. To make a donation, visit the shelter at 390 Thurman Poe Way, Huntington.

The shelter is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and can be reached at 356-0355.
