Manchester art department chair to judge LAC exhibit

The LaFontaine Arts Council has announced that Ejenobo Oke, chair of the art department at Manchester College, will judge the Regional Art Exhibit that opens at Huntington University’s Merillat Centre for the Arts on Friday, Aug. 3.

Ejenobo “Jena” Oke, a fiber and ceramic artist, is an associate professor of art at Manchester University. Her works range from loom-controlled weavings to batik quilts to sculptures that incorporate ceramics, paper, felt and basketry materials. A Nigerian-American, she grew up in her father’s country, but immigrated with her family to the United States, in 1987.

Oke received her B.A. in art from Manchester College (1997) and her M.F.A. in visual studies from Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University (2001). She returned to Manchester in 2006 and currently teaches a variety of courses ranging from an introduction to 2-D and 3-D art to ceramics, art appreciation and art history. At present, she serves as chair of the Art Department at Manchester and has worked as gallery director there since 2008.

The opening reception will take place on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Gallery in the Merillat Centre for the Arts at Huntington University. The show will be open to the public beginning Aug. 3 through Aug. 29. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Entries will be released Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
