Local SWCD offering cost share to farmers for water, soil quality practices

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is offering cost-share to farmers in portions of the Lower Salamonie River Watershed, including parts of Huntington, Blackford, Grant and Wells counties.

The Huntington County SWCD may cover up to 75 percent of the actual or average cost (as designated by the Natural Resource Conservation Service) for implementing best-management practices proven to improve water quality and soil health.

Practices available for cost-share include, but are not limited to cover crops, filter strips, no-till/strip till, reduced till, grassed waterways and nutrient management, as well as equipment modifications.

There are funding caps of $9,000 for cover crops, $14,000 for the implementation of any combination of two or more practices, and $5,000 for equipment modifications. Funding for cost-share will be available in “Tier 1” critical areas until October 2020.

For more information, or to determine if a farmer is eligible for cost-share funding, contact Collin Huffine, watershed coordinator, at 765-914-2324 or collinhuffine87@gmail.com, or call the Huntington County SWCD office at 356-6818 ext. 3.
