New Roanoke fire truck has been completed

The Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department’s new fire truck has been completed, learned the Roanoke Town Council at its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Firefighter Ryan Carroll reported that representatives from the department would be traveling to the truck’s builder, Summit Fire Apparatus, in Edgewood, KY, on Friday, Sept. 28, to inspect the truck. If the vehicle meets their approval, Summit will deliver it to Roanoke in mid-October, said Carroll.

Carroll noted that he had asked Summit if it would be willing to reimburse the department for the mileage costs it would incur in sending representatives to Kentucky, but that the business had refused to do so. He added, though, that Fire Chief Brandon Taylor would be speaking to Summit about the matter.

Council President Dave Tucker announced that Utility Superintendent Paul Swain had retired on Monday, Sept. 17. Swain cited his health as the reason for his retirement, said Tucker. Swain had worked for the town since December 1980.

Supervisor of Operations Phil Hibbert has been serving as the town’s utility superintendent since February and Tucker said that that arrangement would continue. Tucker added that the town would consider hiring a new utility department employee next year.

Council held a public hearing regarding its 2019 budget, which can be viewed online at budgetnotices.in.gov.
Hibbert reported that E&B Paving had completed patching E1000N and sent the town a bill for $13,680, which the board agreed to pay.

Council informed resident Tammy Stein that it had no problem with her finishing an asphalt driveway on her property, even though some of it would be encroaching on a town-owned alleyway.

Hibbert stated that the town would be flushing fire hydrants and performing maintenance on them through October.
