Voters in the second district of the Huntington County Community School Corporation's board of trustees have the choice of returning the board's president for a second term or selecting a newcomer to serve on the board.

Kevin Patrick, who has served as the board's president for three years, is up against newcomer Jon A. Moore on the ballot.

Although the school board election is held at the same time as the Huntington County primary election, the school board is a nonpartisan body and its members are not chosen through political primaries. The winner of the school board election this spring wins a spot on the board.

Patrick and Moore are running in the second district, which includes Warren and Clear Creek townships and part of Huntington Township.

Jon A. Moore

What are your qualifications for the office that you seek?

I believe that a school board member should have a strong belief in the value of education. I have demonstrated this belief through gaining an associate's degree, bachelor's degree, and an MBA with specialization in Accounting. I continue to demonstrate this belief as an adjunct university professor teaching managerial accounting along with other accounting courses. I developed my ability to be a community leader through my service as a traditional Guardsman in the Indiana Air National Guard, reserve police officer, volunteer firefighter and a county councilman.

My work experience includes eight years as a product development technician for a plastics research and development center that required improvement courses, along with software components to measure efficiency with effectiveness. Upon advancing, I have become a strategic planner, business advisor, and accountant. I feel my combined qualifications as an educator, community leader, and advisor will serve the community well in this position.

How can you, as an elected official, help local government operate efficiently as revenues decline?

It is my desire to be part of a school corporation that effectively educates and provide for the development of the students in Huntington County. I have two ideas that can help increase the value of the education the HCCSC can provide while reducing the dependency on tax dollars provided from the State of Indiana.

The first one is on creating a state legislative action to provide an Indiana Income Tax Credit for donations to Indiana school corporations. The advantages are in creating a revenue stream directly from the local community in support of educating our children, while reducing the amount of income tax that goes to the State of Indiana.

The second is on the creation of a HCCSC Foundation. This would facilitate local fund raising for programs and activities along with establishing endowments to help sustain them for generations to come.

Aside from budget woes, what do you see as the major challenge facing the office you seek? How would you meet that challenge?

The major challenge is the generational gap that continuously changes the effectiveness of educational programs. The use of technology is changing more rapidly now than ever before and will continue to alter educational programs. Recently I started teaching a new accounting course and requested the textbook to begin preparing my lectures. I received an e-mail that an e-book was available for download online.

It is easy to look around and see how technology changes in recent years have impacted households. The computer has changed the way a lot of jobs are completed, how courses are taught and the way students learn.

I plan on continuing as an adjunct professor so I may learn firsthand about technology used in classrooms. As a parent, my daughters will continue to educate me on how they learn best. This allows me the ability to understand the needs of HCCSC and the parents.
