There will be lots of activities for students and alumni during Huntington University’s homecoming weekend, which officially kicks off on Friday, Oct. 5. Among its highlights is a concert by an alum who has become a nationally known singer with her appearance on the TV show, “The Voice.”
Alumni check-in begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and is open through 4 p.m. Check-in continues Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At 11 a.m. Friday alumni awards and a chapel service will be held in Zurcher Auditorium at the Merillat Centre for the Arts (MCA).
On Friday, Oct. 5, the festivities get under way at 6 p.m. with the coronation of Homecoming king and queen in the Habecker Dining Commons.
A volleyball game, with the Foresters facing Goshen College, takes place at 7 p.m. in the Plex.
Also at 7 p.m., the Davis Hall Follies gets fired up in Zurcher Auditorium.
New this year, fireworks will cap the night, beginning around 9:30 p.m. over Lake SnoTip. Seating is available on the HU Mall.
On Saturday, Oct. 6, a 5K Run/Walk begins the day, with registration open at 7:30 a.m. in the Plex parking lot.
Following the 5K, the homecoming parade begins at a new day and time, at 10 a.m. on Saturday on the Mall, with a homecoming party following at 11 a.m. at the Quad. The powderpuff championship game will kick off at 11:30 a.m., also on the Quad.
The Troupe performs at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the studio theater at MCA.
“The Troupe is our theater crew,” explains Lynette Fager, HU’s director of communications. “They’ll be performing a variety show with lots of songs, that kind of thing.”
A volleyball game, with the Foresters facing Grace College, gets underway at 1 p.m. in the Plex, and an alumni baseball game will also happen at 1 p.m. at Forest Glen Park.
Various department reunions will be held at 1:30 p.m., including the Education, Nursing, Business and Natural and Mathematical Sciences departments.
The Student Activities Board 30th birthday bash will be held at 2 p.m. at the Hub.
“That organization is turning 30 years old this year and it’s a gathering for past SAB members to come and be nostalgic and relive old memories and new ones, and current members to kind of party,” Fager says. “It’s basically kind of a come-and-go sort of party. Cake and that kind of thing will be there.”
Men’s soccer vs. Bethel kicks off the final athletic event of the weekend, at 3 p.m. at King Stadium.
Class reunions will be held at 4 p.m. for classes of 2013, 2008, 2003, 1998, 1993, 1988, 1983, 1978, 1973 and the Golden Years (50 years or more). A dinner and lecture by Dr. Brautigam, 2018 Professor of the Year, follows with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the lecture at 6 p.m.
Highlighting the weekend’s activities will be HU 2017 grad and “The Voice” standout Christiana Danielle in concert at 7:30 p.m., in Zurcher Auditorium. For information on tickets, contact the MCA box office at 359-4261.
