City residents have options for refuse despite landfill closing

The Huntington Street Department will send out a grappler truck like this one to pick up old furniture and other large items through its orange sticker program. It’s just one of the ways city residents can continue to dispose of unwanted items after the Huntington City Landfill closes on March 29.

The Huntington City Landfill is set to close on March 29, but residents of the City of Huntington will still have a variety of options for getting rid of their unwanted items.

City crews can be requested to pick up large items that won’t fit in a trash can, as well as bagged or bundled yard waste. Household hazardous waste can still be dropped off at the Hazardous Materials Facility on CR 300W.

One of the ongoing programs is the orange sticker program, something City Services Superintendent Bob Caley characterizes as “city-wide cleanup all year long.”

City residents who have a dresser, mattress, sofa or other large item to get rid of can purchase an orange sticker for $5 at the Huntington Street Department, 634 Webster St., or at the city clerk’s office on the second floor of the City Building, 300 Cherry St.

Residents should place the orange sticker on the item to be picked up, place the item out in the normal trash pickup location and request pickup by calling 356-4720, selecting first extension 1 for the street department and then extension 3 for the orange sticker program. Leave the address where the item is to be picked up.

“They will come out the next day,” Caley says, and the item will disappear.

One orange sticker is required for each item or bundle of items, he notes.

“Five dollars is cheaper than taking it out to the landfill,” Caley says. “I look for this program to grow once our landfill closes.”

The orange sticker program is designed mainly for old furniture, Caley says, and does not include televisions or other household hazardous waste.

Electronics and other items including oil, paint, solvents, tires, batteries and propane tanks can continue to be dropped off free of charge at the Hazardous Materials Facility, 517S-300W. The facility is open every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The facility is operated by Huntington County Solid Waste and is located adjacent to the Huntington City Landfill site.

In addition to orange sticker items, city crews will pick up yard debris through the brown bag program — and this service is free.

City residents should purchase lawn refuse bags at the retailer of their choice, bag the compostable yard debris and place the bags in the normal trash pickup area. Call 356-4720, selecting first extension 1 for the street department and then extension 1 again for the brown bag program. Leave the address and a pickup will be scheduled.

“We’re shooting for the next day,” Caley says. “And that is absolutely free.”

The same procedure should be followed to schedule pickup of trees, brush and limbs. Items should be cut into sections no bigger than about four feet. Call 356-4720, select extension 1 for the street department and then extension 2 to leave an address for tree, brush and limb pickup. Again, there is no charge.

For home remodeling projects, Caley suggests the homeowner rent a small dumpster for the debris. While city crews can pick up stacks of old lumber, they’re unable to pick up old drywall and other remodeling waste.

The pickup schedule for regular household trash remains unchanged. Pickup is provided by Advanced Disposal, a nationwide company that has contracted with the City of Huntington to provide trash pickup and disposal.

Recyclables are picked up curbside every other week by Republic Services, another nationwide company that has contracted with the City of Huntington to provide that service. A schedule of recycling pickup dates can be found online at www.hunt ington.in.us, under the “City Services” section of the City of Huntington website.

More information is available online at www .huntington.in.us, in the “City Services” section on the City of Huntington website; or by calling the Huntington Street Department at 356-4720, extension 1.
