Governor signs Zay legislation to help public learn about telecoils

State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) joined Gov. Eric Holcomb at the Statehouse on June 24 for the ceremonial signing  of of House Enrolled Act 1113, telecoil and beacon positioning system legislation.

A telecoil is a low-cost feature of a hearing aid, which serves as an antenna to eliminate background noise and improve clarity.

However, some hearing aid providers are not aware of this technology and do not inform their clients about the benefits of them.

To ensure buyers are aware of this feature, HEA 1113, sponsored by Zay, requires those who fit and dispense hearing aids to provide their clients with information on telecoils.

“I believe HEA 1113 will help inform Hoosiers of this important hearing technology and its benefits,” said Zay. “I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have for people across Indiana.”

HEA 1113 also creates specific requirements for an audio frequency induction loop (AFIL), an assistive listening technology, and a beacon positioning system, which is a Bluetooth-capable product that helps guide blind people around buildings after downloading an app.
