Zay bill on extending survivor benefits for teachers, public employers gets signed

A bill sponsored by State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) that extends survivor benefits coverage for public employees and teachers was ceremonially signed into law by Gov. Eric Holcomb on June 24.

House Enrolled Act 1059 provides a public employee’s surviving spouse and/or dependents of public employees with at least 10 years of service their benefits, regardless of whether the member dies in service, in a position covered by the public employee’s retirement fund or the Indiana State Teachers’ Retirement Fund, or if the member dies after they retire from service.

“This is a good step to supporting public employees and their families,” Zay said. “Extending these benefits to the family of public servants like teachers is common-sense, and I was proud to sponsor this bill this session.”
