Schenkel will return to the race track in June

Huntington's own ARCA driver Kent Schenkel will be revving up his car's engine again this summer with a trip to the ARCA Racing for Wildlife 200 at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, MI, on June 11.

This time, you're invited.

After a successful season last year, qualifying for ARCA races and participating in the 2009 Racing for Wildlife 200 and the Ansell Cut Protection 150 at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL, Schenkel has decided to race those same events again this year.

"Last year was a learning experience," Schenkel says. "This year it will definitely be more competitive."

Schenkel has improved his car with a new engine that gives added torque and 800 horsepower.

In addition, he has formed a solid relationship with Prism Motorsports based in Monroeville, NC, a NASCAR team with No. 55 Michael McDowell and No. 66 Dave Blaney as drivers.

Prism has allowed Schenkel to use its crew chief for the ARCA races, and also provided a place for Schenkel to upgrade his car.

Schenkel says that a group of local residents is making the trip to M.I.S. to watch him race, and that anyone from the area is welcome to attend. Tickets are available at the gate, and Schenkel's group will be sitting in Section 26 at the speedway.

Individuals or businesses interested in sponsoring Schenkel financially may do so by contacting him at 409-5065.

Schenkel says one set of tires is $2,500, highlighting the immense costs involved in racing.

Schenkel remains grateful for the opportunity to live his dream, even as he approaches his 60th birthday.

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained," he says.
