Leaf pick-up to start in Huntington on Monday, Oct. 28, if weather allows

Leaf pick-up for the City of Huntington will begin Oct. 28, weather permitting.

Updates will be posted on the City of Huntington Facebook page on a regular basis, or residents can get updates by calling City Services at 356-4720 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Leaf collection will be done by the zones used for trash collection. Crews will start in Zone 1 (Monday) first and after it is completed move to Zone 2, then Zone 3, etc. until all zones have been collected.

This does not mean that leaves will be picked on the same day as your trash route every week, city officials note. This is how trucks will move throughout the city collecting leaves. A minimum of two full rounds will be made during the season.

Depending on the weather and the rate at which the leaves come down, the collections will last until the end of December.

Leaf collection can occur any day of the designated collection week, officials note. It is important for residents to have leaves ready for pick-up by 7 a.m. the first Monday of their designated pick-up week.

To schedule a pick-up of leaves placed in brown bags, residents may call 356-4720 to have the bags picked up. Brown bags are picked up each Tuesday.

There will be no leaf collection on the following holidays:
• Thanksgiving – Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29.
• Christmas – Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 24 and 25.

Preparing leaves for pick-up
• Leaves will only be collected if they are raked to the curb in front of the residence or placed in bags and placed at the curb for collection
• Do not rake leaves into the streets because this blocks storm drains and can cause local street flooding.
• Other yard waste should not be mixed with the leaves.
• Vehicles should not be parked in front of leaves. If there is a vehicle blocking the leaves, city crews will not be able to pick them up.

Safety and maintenance
• Parents should remind children not to play in leaf piles near the street.
• Residents should make sure that leaves are not near a storm drain.
• Residents should help to ensure that storm drains are clear of debris.
