HNHS graduation set for June 5

Huntington North High School seniors and their parents can finally proceed with making plans as the graduation date for the class of 2009 has now been set.

Commencement for this year's seniors will be held in the Huntington North gymnasium on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. The date and time have been posted online and can be found by going to the school corporation's Web site at www.hccsc.k12.in.us, then clicking on the "Visit our schools" link and choosing "Huntington North High School."

A committee -- chaired by HNHS Principal Jeremy Gulley -- that included parents, senior class officers, senior class sponsors, teachers and one of the school's guidance counselors made the decision this week. Together, they considered the possibility of any further weather-related cancellations before coming up with a date for graduation, Gulley said on Friday, March 13.

"It allowed for enough make-up days," he related. "I can't imagine having sufficient enough weather to change the date."
Planning for graduation is often a difficult task given the extremes in weather conditions that often hit the area.

"It's a tough call to make, but it's exactly consistent with what we did last year," Gulley noted, adding last year's graduation was also held the first week in June. "We realize there's no perfect date and we have to consider Indiana weather, but we also realize they (seniors and their families) need a date in order to make plans."

While the HNHS Web site currently has only the date, time and location of the commencement ceremony, it notes that other activities will be posted as soon as they are set.
Among those activities are achievement night and the baccalaureate.

"Additional information (on the Web site) will follow for all other senior date items," Gulley said.
