Kathryn “Katie” Garrett was recently named the winner of the Ronald Mitchell Award presented by the Child Protection Team of Huntington County.

Each year, the Child Protection Team presents the award to a person or group of people who have made an impact on the safety of children in Huntington County.

“Ron was known for his willingness to think outside of the box for the sake of the child, while maintaining the child’s safety. Ron realized it took everyone putting aside their own agendas and work together if we were going to make Huntington a safe place for children to live and thrive,” stated Jan Williams, Child Protection Team chairman.

Garrett and her husband reside in Huntington County, where she is an attorney in town with Hartburg, Roth, Garrott, Hal- verstadt and Garrett. She serves as a Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) for Huntington County Circuit Court, and serves on Child Protection Team and the Huntington County Fatality Review.

“Katie prides herself on the quality of her work and she works diligently to engage children directly, in various settings, to gain a holistic view from their perspective. She is fair, professional and a true child advocate. She works collaboratively with other community partners, along with the DCS staff to help ensure the child receives the services that best meets their needs,” noted Kerri Baker, Department of Child Services (DCS) director.

“I am very surprised by this award. I don’t do what I do for recognition, I do it for the kids, but I am grateful for this award,” Garrett said.
