Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center getting updates, renovations

The Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center is in the midst of conducting major updates and renovations to its facility, including its exhibit galleries and exterior windows.

“A crew from Felderman Design Build will be here all week renovating, repairing and replacing all of our exterior windows,” said Daniel Johns, executive director of the center. “This was something that has needed to be done for a very long time.”

The window renovations, valued at approximately $10,000, were the in-kind donation of Felderman Design Build as their donation to the center’s Efforts For Education annual campaign. The old window frames had deteriorated badly and there were multiple panes broken and cracked.

However, the windows are not the only things being updated at the Quayle Center. The exhibit galleries have been updated with new materials brought out from the collections storage and put on display. The displays also feature brand new informational signage, which were underwritten by a Hiner Family Fund grant through the Huntington County Community Foundation. The new signage helps solve another long-time need.

“We had just received a grant at the end of 2019 to replace our informational signage. We had wanted to make all the signs much larger to assist visitors in reading them more easily,” Johns said. “When the COVID crisis came, it canceled our spring school tours and shut down the center to the public for a couple of months. I decided to utilize that time to not only replace the signs, but also fully update the exhibits. This included the exhibit galleries, our large item display cases, our admissions area and our front foyer.”

As part of the exhibit updates, the center now has a designated area which will feature changing exhibits and themes. The early plan is to host two to three different exhibits in this area per year. The center is seeking a named underwriter for these exhibits and area. The first exhibit for this area is expected in fall of 2020.

The center will also update its heating and cooling systems, landscaping and resealing its parking area in the upcoming months.

The center will begin its 2020 Efforts For Education annual fund-raising campaign in July. Assistance for future projects in addition to annual funding is appreciated.

The Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center’s hours are Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the general public. Educational, outreach and adult group programs may be scheduled, as always, for Mondays through Fridays. Groups constitute 10 or more people for a prescheduled formal program.

The center’s primary audiences are school children through visiting school tour groups and educational outreach programs. The center serves thousands of school children throughout Indiana annually. The center also frequently provides programs for visiting adult and Senior groups.
