Markle council hears that rains have caused problems

Heavy rains have caused problems in Markle.

Markle Utility Superintendent Rick Asher told members of the Markle Town Council at their meeting on Wednesday, March 18, that the town received a total of 5.25 inches of rainfall March 8-10.

The heavy rains resulted in motors becoming submerged in water at the wastewater treatment plant. The power to the motors was shut off until the water was drained. There is no known damage and it took only three hours to drain the water, Asher says.

In other business Wednesday evening, Marion Services LLC representative Stan Dyke was present to discuss any issues with trash pickup. He explained to the council that any trash to be picked up must be bagged, even if it is in a container. If loose trash is dumped into the trash truck, it is likely to blow out of the truck and onto the street.

Asher also reported to the council that the several of the town's capital investment plan projects are complete.

Although the town submitted several of these projects to the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) for funding, only the water tower project was included in a report by OCRA. Asher resubmitted the projects on behalf of the town.

Town Marshal John Markley informed the council that town police received their new computer system but have yet to install it.

The council announced the town's spring cleanup days as well as Markle's policies regarding the cleanup. May 5 was designated for metal item pickup. May 12 will be pickup day for all other items.

Items that will not be collected for disposal are hazardous materials, tires, liquid paints, tree limbs and other brush, wire, fence, construction material or other items disposed of in the normal curbside garbage pickup.

Citizens wanting their name placed on the collection list for the pickup days should call the town clerk's office at 758-3193.
