Science Central to offer up a variety of camps for children

Science Central is offering a variety of camps for children this summer.

The first three days of a camp, the children will have an on-site camp experience. The building will be closed to the public on those days, making it easier to maintain social distancing throughout the camp.

For each camp’s final two days, on Thursday and Friday, children will receive activity kits to complete at home. Science Central educators will be available to meet with campers virtually to answer any questions they might have.

On-site camp days will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with check-in starting at 8:30 a.m. Campers must supply their own lunch.

Registration is open for all camps. Deluxe-level Science Central members will get a discounted registration fee.

The deadline to register for each camp is at 10 a.m., 14 days before the camp begins.

To register for any camp below, visit sciencecentral.org/programs/programs-on-site/stem-camps/summer-camp/program-policy-faq.html.

STEM Camps
All STEM Camps are for ages 7 to 11.

Science Central’s STEM Camps are:
• June 7 to 11: Super or Not? – Explore the science and science fiction of superpowers and movie magic. Use “the force” to create a hovercraft, analyze owl “deliveries” and test the super-senses of animals and humans.
• June 14 to 18: The HeART of the Matter – Use science to create art and use art to uncover science through chromatography, construction of musical instruments and creation of paints.
• June 21 to 25: Beyond the Solar System – What lies beyond Pluto? Is it possible to explore stars and galaxies beyond the Milky Way? Could there be life on other planets? These questions and more will be answered during this out-of-this-world week.
• June 28 to July 2: Dig It – Make a fossil and discover artifacts. Learn how to think, observe and record like an archaeologist.
• Aug. 2 to 6: Don’t Try This At Home – Presented by MDwise, this camp will feature flames, explosions and slime. Join to (safely) do some of the things that shouldn’t be done at home.

Tech Camps
• June 7 to 11: LEGO Tech Camp, ages 6 to 9 – Build, program and test a robot using basic principles of computer programming and LEGO construction.
• June 14 to 18: LEGO Tech Camp, ages 10-13 – Build, program and test a robot using basic principles of computer programming and LEGO construction.
• June 21 to 25: Engineering Tech Camp, ages 6 to 9 – Join this camp to build a Rube Goldberg machine.
• June 28 to July 2: Engineering Tech Camp, ages 10-13 – Build, test and destroy. Catapults and trebuchets are the order of business this week.
• Aug. 2 to 6: Video Game Camp, ages 10 to 13 – Presented by MDwise, this camp will instruct children on making animated video and computer games. Bring ear buds to cut down on outside use. To save games, bring a USB flash drive.

Other Camps
Both camps are for ages 7 to 13.
• July 19 to 23: Mission to Mars, ages 7 to 13 – Destination: Mars. What does it take to get there? What will be discovered? Is it possible to work and live there? This camp will prepare children for adventures to a new world without ever leaving their own.
• July 26 to 30: Plan, Plot and Print – What do tennis shoes, artificial limbs and superheroes have in common? They all utilize 3D printing technology! Children will learn the art and science of computer design as they create their own 3D printed item to take home at the end of the week.
