News from Sept. VFW meeting

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary President James Kneller called the Thursday, Sept. 9, meeting to order at 6 p.m. by introducing a new member, John Michaels.

Applications for membership for 2022 were Jeff Paul joining on his father Doyle J. Paul, who served in Korea Oct. 1951 to July 1953 receiving Korean Service medal with two Bronze Stars, as well as Ryan Lewis joining on his brother Cory Adam Lewis who served in Korea, received Korean Defense Service Medal and the War on Terrorism Service Medal, as well as Brooklyn Holzinger joining on father Robert Holzinger Jr., who is a post member.  Applicants were voted into membership by voice vote.

Communications were Gen. Orders No. 4, a letter from Department President Linda Misuraca, a letter from Salvation Army, Pathfinder Services “Thank You” for a flag and emergency approval letter for dues receipts.

Chaplain Lois Walling reported she sent a “Get Well” card to Pam Leyman, and sympathy cards to Don and Karman Lahr (his sister passed), State President Linda Misuraca (her mother passed) and to the Frances Whitacre family. It was also reported that 118,630 poppies have been displayed since last meeting.
Kneller passed out the chairmen guide sheets received at School of Instruction and report forms were printed. Charlotte Johnson reported Indiana Day at National Home in Eaton Rapids, MI, on Sunday, Sept. 26.  

Gloria Holzinger reported on the upcoming Bake Off, with an entry deadline of Sept. 29 and an entry fee. Bring baked goods plus judge’s sample in on Friday, Oct. 1, between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.  Judging will be Saturday, Oct. 2, between 11 a.m. and 1p.m., with awards at 2 p.m. and baked goods auctioned off at 3 p.m.  Judges will be from outside sources.  Question was raised on direction of proceeds.

After discussion, Holzinger reported that the post would do Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 30, on upper tier of parking lot from noon to 2 p.m.

Karen Sandlin reported that membership will be at 65 percent after the dues were transmitted.  Sandlin also reported on mentoring and veterans and family support. Kneller encouraged all to sign up for the Action Corp Weekly and to be sure to keep legislators on speed dial for better veteran’s benefits.
Good of the Order Sandy Funk reported she had received notification that past District President Penny Fredericks had passed away on Friday, Sept. 3.
