Election filing officially open as of January 5

Wednesday, Jan. 5, marked the first day that interested parties were eligible to file for candidacy in the 2022 primary and general elections, and a few filings have already taken place since then.

According to Shelley Septer, the Huntington County Clerk of Courts, Wednesday was the first day that:

• A major political party candidate could file a declaration of candidacy for the primary election.
• An independent or minor party candidate could file a petition of nomination for the general election.
• A declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate at the general election could be filed.

Yvette Runkle, voter registration deputy, provided a list for candidacy spots for the 2022 primary. They include:
• Prosecuting Attorney.
• Circuit Court Clerk.
• County Auditor.
• County Recorder.
• County Sheriff.
• County Surveyor.
• County Assessor.
• County Commissioner District 1.
• County Council Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4.
• Huntington Township Trustee.
• Huntington Township Board Members (3).
• Jackson Township Trustee.
• Jackson Township Board Members (3).
• Clear Creek Township Trustee.
• Clear Creek Township Board Members (3).
• Dallas Township Trustee.
• Dallas Township Board Members (3).
• Warren Township Trustee.
• Warren Township Board Members (3).  
• Union Township Trustee.
• Union Township Board Members (3).
• Lancaster Township Trustee.
• Lancaster Township Board Members (3).
• Jefferson Township Trustee.
• Jefferson Township Board Members (3).
• Polk Township Trustee.
• Polk Township Board Members (3).
• Wayne Township Trustee.
• Wayne Township Board Members (3).

• Salamonie Township Trustee.

Candidate packets are available in the Election Office Room 202 at the Huntington County Clerk’s Office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Clerk’s Office is located at the Huntington County Courthouse, 201 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.  

Septer also explained that anyone wanting an absentee ballott may start requesting them now. The actual ballots will not be sent out until a later date.
The date for the Primary Election 2022 is Tuesday, May 3. The date for the General Election 2022 is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
