City’s sidewalk program resumes for 2022

The City of Huntington’s Sidewalk Replacement Program has opened for the year and is accepting applications. Anyone who wants to repair a sidewalk in the City of Huntington can get help paying for the repairs for up to 50 percent of the project cost.

To qualify under the program, a sidewalk must have some sort of defect such as a crack or trip hazard. It covers only sidewalks that run parallel to a street, including sidewalks that run across a driveway.

If the sidewalk is on a corner, the city will pay the full cost of installing the required ADA-compliant curb ramp.

Applications will be accepted for as long as the weather is good for construction, typically until November. Prior to being approved for the program, the resident or business that applied will obtain quotes, select a contractor and have the work completed.

The contractor will bill the city’s share directly to the city, with the remaining costs going to the property owner.

The city has offered financial help for replacing sidewalks since 2004, and the current program has been in place since 2013.

Between 20 and 25 sidewalk projects are funded annually on average, but the program’s roughly $50,000 budget could allow for many more.

The program’s goal is to improve community accessibility and bolster the quality of sidewalks while bringing them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Common problems the program looks to address include ADA-compliance issues such as steep slopes or trip hazards greater than a quarter-inch.

The Sidewalk Replacement Program is open to both residents and businesses.
