HCCSC officials hire HN basketball coach

Huntington County Community Schools announced the hiring of Eric Thompson as Huntington North’s new basketball coach on Monday, May 1. Thompson spent the last seven years at Peru where his teams won sectional titles in 2022 and 2023. Thompson has a reputation for leaving a program better than how he found it. As he leaves a Peru program that went from a sub-.500 team his first three years into a 69-26 over the last four seasons, including the sectional titles, he takes over a Huntington North team that went 8-16 this past. Thompson replaces Craig Teagle who boasts a 443-267 career record since 1993 with one semi-state appearance at Jay County in 2006, along with four other sectional titles there, and most recently, a sectional crown at Huntington North in 2019, and finishing 117-77 in his eight years as a Viking. Thompson started his coaching career at LaVille for one season in 2002 then spent nine  years at Peru from 2003-2011, turning a four-win team into a consistent winning program. He spent five seasons at Manchester, once again starting with a four-win season,  before leading the Squires to seasons with 16, 17, and 13 wins over the last three years there. Thompson met with players and parents at the elementary, middle, and high school levels on Tuesday, May 9, to start his tenure with the Vikings.
