Tax can be estimated online

Huntington County property tax bills aren't expected to be sent out until June or July, but taxpayers can now check a state-operated Web site to see an estimate of how much their 2009 tax bill will be.

The Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF), in partnership with the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University, is offering the online property tax calculator for Huntington County taxpayers. This tool allows taxpayers to enter their property's assessed value, taxing district and possible deductions to see tax bill estimates for bills due in 2009.

Taxpayers can access the tool from the DLGF's Web site at dlgf/4932.htm.

Taxpayers can learn their property's assessed value from Huntington County's Geographic Information System (GIS) Web site,

"The estimates provided by this tool are projections that taxpayers can use to determine how legislation passed last year, like the circuit breaker caps, will affect them," DLGF Commissioner Tim Rushenberg said.

The release came after the approval March 10 of Huntington County's 2009 budget and certification of tax rates and levies.

The estimates provided on the Web site are projections only and should not be taken as a statement of true tax liability, which is determined by the county, DLGF officials say.

A copy of the Huntington County budget and the DLGF analysis also will be available online at htm.
