Sgt. Tom Tallman fund-raiser set for May 15 at Hier's Park

A benefit fund-raiser for Huntington County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Tom Tallman will be held Friday, May 15, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Heritage Hall at Hier's Park.

In addition to a barbecue pork dinner, there will also be a silent auction and bake sale to help Tallman with mounting medical bills, the result of his ongoing two-year battle with cancer.

Tallman was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in August 2007. He has had two surgeries, the second this past January after the cancer had spread to the esophagus and trachea and several lymph nodes. Tallman's mother, Jean Florent, says doctors were not able to clear two spots during the surgery, so Tallman has undergone numerous radiation treatments.

"He is still under doctors' care and the treatments will go on," Florent notes.

Tallman has been back to his sheriff's department job and also his mowing business this past week, Florent says, making as much effort as he can.

"It's an effort, but he's working," she says.

"I realize it's good for his mental health -- When you sit home and do nothing, the days are long."

Tallman has been treated at several hospitals during the ordeal, and although he has insurance, it's just not keeping up with the mounting bills, Florent comments.

"He's got many hospital bills, and the insurance has helped, but he's still got his regular bills and then extra," she notes.

A free-will donation will be taken at the fund-raiser. Checks can also be mailed to the Tom Tallman Benefit Fund, in care of Wells Fargo Bank, 2720 Guilford St., Huntington, IN 46750.
